Planners Protect Your Pocketbook
By: Candis L. Yeager

In a tough economy, celebrations of life’s milestones with our loved ones are as important as ever. When the wallet is growing anemic, the parties and celebrations get smaller... or get cut out completely! If you’re wondering whether to host that big holiday party for your friends, little Timmy’s birthday, or that fairy tale wedding, remember this: everyone needs a silver lining – something to look forward to and smile about in rough times.

Though a planner may seem like an additional or unnecessary expense, now is the most important time to have one. No matter your event – wedding, party, or New Year’s celebration – a good planner can increase the impact of every precious dollar you invest. It’s what a seasoned event planner does every day.

Despite common misconceptions, planners actually protect you from what I like to call “pocketbook anemia.” There are a number of discounts that planners have access to through their network of service providers that they can pass along to you to save you more than you could on your own. For example: you may pay $1.25 for an item that may only cost your planner $1.00. On a party needing 1000, the savings is $250! In addition to saving money, planners negotiate contracts on your behalf because they know what concessions to ask for – ways to decrease set-up and delivery fees, how to arrange for extras from your caterers and venues. In essence, getting you more “bang for your buck.”

You may think they just take your ideas, get you a few pieces of paper to sign, and run along to spend your money? Not quite right. When you enlist the services of a planner, you’re hiring someone who can efficiently take on your most time consuming chores. They know:

• cost effective locations to have your party
• the best time of year or day to schedule your event to save cash
• how you can alter your menu to get what you want and still afford it
• alternative decorative touches without going over budget
• innovative ways to announce your event and spread the word

It’s all in the details, and your planner knows how to accomplish your event on a shoestring budget without compromising the quality of the experience. When you don’t know what the professionals know, you can often miss out on discounts, bonus goodies, added value items, and time-saving tips. Don’t think about hiring a planner in terms of what you’re spending, but in what they can save you.

How much is your sanity and time worth?
